About the Program

Welcome to the Graduate Program in Translation Studies (PGET) at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), Brazil.

PGET is recognized as a national and international center of excellence in training researchers in the field of Translation Studies. Established in 2003 by a group of faculty members dedicated to the advancement of translation research, PGET has, over the past two decades, expanded its faculty, strengthened its research areas, and consistently achieved high academic standards in evaluations conducted by Brazil’s Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES). In the evaluation periods of 2013–2016 and 2017–2020, the program received a rating of 6 out of 7, placing it among the top graduate programs in the country in the field of Linguistics and Literature. PGET is further distinguished by the quality of its academic output, its strong commitment to inclusion, and its broad international engagement.

Mission and Goals of PGET/UFSC

PGET’s mission is to establish and maintain a highly qualified institutional hub that serves as a benchmark standard at local, regional, national, and international levels, integrating research, teaching, and outreach activities in the fields of Translation and Interpreting Studies in Brazil and beyond.

The program’s overarching goal is to train and enhance the skills of high-level professionals committed to knowledge production and advancement, enabling them to work in research, teaching, community engagement, and other professional practices within the field of Translation and Interpreting Studies.

Specific objectives include: Promoting linguistic and cultural diversity; Supporting innovative and socially engaged translation practices; Encouraging national and international institutional cooperation; Advancing inclusive policies and affirmative action initiatives; Fostering an interdisciplinary and critical academic environment.

Area of Concentration and Research Lines

PGET/UFSC is organized around an area of focus termed Retextualization Processes, and it offers two main research fields:

  • Translation and Interpreting Studies from a Literary and/or Multidisciplinary Perspective
  • Translation and Interpreting Studies from a Linguistic and/or Multidisciplinary Perspective

Faculty

PGET’s faculty is composed of professors working in a variety of languages, including German, Spanish, English, Italian, Latin, and Brazilian Sign Language (Libras). The program also benefits from the presence of faculty members from countries such as France, Spain, and Uruguay, contributing to its rich linguistic and cultural diversity. Most faculty members have solid international academic backgrounds, with undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, or postdoctoral experience abroad. These characteristics make PGET/UFSC an excellent choice for international students seeking high-quality academic training in Brazil.

Programs: Master’s, Doctorate, and Postdoctoral Fellowship

Program Duration

  • Master’s: up to 24 months
  • Doctorate: up to 48 months
  • Postdoctoral Fellowship: 3 to 12 months

Minimum Credit Requirements

  • Master’s: 24 course credits + dissertation defense
  • Doctorate: 36 course credits + thesis defense
  • Postdoctoral: no credit requirements

Final Research Requirements

  • Master’s: public defense of a research dissertation
  • Doctorate: public defense of a doctoral thesis with a significant contribution to the field
  • Postdoctoral: submission of a final report for certification

Research work may be submitted in Portuguese or another foreign language.

Degree Completion Requirements

Master’s Degree
To earn a Master’s degree, the student must:

  • Defend a dissertation in a public session;
  • Pass a qualifying exam evaluated by at least two PhDs;
  • Submit a qualification paper with a minimum of 40 pages of argumentative academic writing;
  • Submit a dissertation with a minimum of 80 pages of academic writing;
  • Achieve a final average grade of 7.0 or higher;
  • Include an abstract in Portuguese, an abstract in English, and keywords;
  • For dissertations in Libras, video recordings must follow specific guidelines;
  • Follow the university’s formatting guidelines;
  • The dissertation may be written in Portuguese or another language.

Doctoral Degree
To earn a PhD, the student must:

  • Defend an original thesis in a public session;
  • Pass a qualifying exam evaluated by at least three PhDs;
  • Submit a qualification paper with a minimum of 80 pages of academic writing;
  • Submit a thesis with a minimum of 150 pages of academic writing;
  • Achieve a final average grade of 7.0 or higher;
  • Include an abstract in Portuguese, an abstract in English, and keywords;
  • For theses in Libras, video recordings must follow specific guidelines;
  • Follow the university’s formatting guidelines;
  • The thesis may be written in Portuguese or another language.

Admission Process

Master’s and Doctorate Programs
Admissions are conducted through calls for applications published every semester. International applicants are welcome and may participate entirely online, as the entire process is remote.

 Submission of documents via email, including: Research proposal; Curriculum Vitae (standard or Lattes); Proof of undergraduate degree; Academic transcript; ID/passport; Proof of language proficiency. 

Three-stage evaluation:

  1. Written research proposal
  2. Curriculum assessment
  3. Oral interview via videoconference with the prospective advisor

Language Proficiency Requirements

  • Master’s: Proof of English proficiency is mandatory. Depending on the call for applications, additional languages may be required.
  • Doctorate: Proof of proficiency in English and one additional foreign language is mandatory. In some cases, proficiency in up to three or four languages may be required.

Additional Notes:

  • International applicants must provide proof of proficiency in Portuguese, as required in the call for applications.
  • Indigenous Brazilian applicants may have their native language recognized as a foreign language (subject to committee approval).
  • Deaf students who use Libras may have their proficiency in Portuguese recognized as equivalent to a foreign language.
  • Academic requirements for international applicants include a recognized undergraduate diploma, proof of Portuguese proficiency (CELPE-Bras or equivalent), and choosing a prospective advisor listed in the call.

Postdoctoral Program

PGET accepts proposals on a rolling basis from PhD holders interested in conducting postdoctoral research under the supervision of a core faculty member. Fellowships may last from 3 to 12 months and can be renewed up to four times, pending committee approval and supervisor consent.

First step: Contact the program and identify a potential supervisor aligned with your research interests. The program office will provide guidance on documentation and procedures.

  • Statement of awareness regarding voluntary activities
  • Proof of financial support and availability
  • Research plan and personal documents

Regulations: The postdoctoral fellowship follows the guidelines established in UFSC’s Normative Resolution No. 173/2022/CUn, available in Portuguese, English, and Spanish.
