Translation and Interpretation Studies with a literary and/or multidisciplinary approach

This line of research proposes to contemplate the plural sides of the translation phenomenon, considering the aspects of cultural, historical, and ideological specificities, through a range of translation theories, different critical approaches and analytical evaluations of translations, as well as different proposals to study the historical paths of translation with a literary and/or multidisciplinary approach. Literary is taken in its broad sense, encompassing a wide range of non-technical works, from traditional written and oral forms to new manifestations in different media. Translation, an activity developed under conditions of cultural, historical and ideological specificities, can be investigated through discourses constructed as theoretical frameworks and answers to different and specific questions relating to each corpus examined. In this sense, the choice of the theoretical-methodological space, informed by the proposed interrogation mode, allows different perspectives on the translation activity. It is also proposed to examine corpora of translated literary texts, verifying the theoretical procedures underlying the activity, in its contextualization and historical development; the contribution of corpora studies to the production of alternative glossaries and dictionaries and the description of literary translations; the practice of literary translation; the study of translation processes (cognitive and textual) concerning the learning of foreign literature; technological resources, interpretation, didactics of literary translation, and literary translation in different languages.

Translation and Interpretation Studies with a linguistic and/or multidisciplinary approach

This line of research proposes to consider the plurality of the translation phenomenon, considering the aspects of cultural, historical, and ideological specificities, through a range of translation theories, different critical approaches and analytical evaluations of translations, as well as different proposals to study the historical paths of linguistic and/or multidisciplinary aspects of translation and interpretation. Translation, an activity developed under conditions of cultural, historical and ideological specificities, can be investigated through discourses constructed as theoretical frameworks and answers to different and specific questions relating to each corpus. The line proposes to analyze the specificities of the linguistic process of different texts and contexts, of interpretation in its various facets in different contexts and modes, to contribute to a scientific description of interpretation and its specific strategies. The line proposes, in particular, to consider the different modalities in which processes are applied that follow principles of similarity between the source language and the target language, including sign languages and spoken languages and different signs. The different types of acts of interpretation are also the research target in this line of Translation Studies. Several factors and phenomena can be identified and analyzed in simultaneous or consecutive interpretations, which can also be specific to these contexts. The different contexts of interpretation are still the subject of investigation, from the community one, one of the most common in Brazil regarding Libras and Portuguese languages, to the most specialized, educational, legal, and medical, among others.

Literary Studies of Translation and Interpretation

Theory, Criticism and History of Translation

This line of research dealt with the translation phenomenon in its cultural, historical and ideological specificities, theoretical, critical and analytical translation approaches, and different proposals for studying the historical paths of translation. Corpora examination of translated texts.

Lexicography, Translation and Foreign Languages Teaching

This line of research dealt with the study and the analysis of lexicographical tools (dictionary, computerized resources); research of their improvement for the translation process and learning of a foreign language. Relationship between learning and use of lexicographical instruments.

Interpretation Studies

This line of research proposed to analyze the specificities of the interpretation process considering its plural sides in different contexts, aiming to contribute to a scientific description of interpretation and its specific strategies.

Translation and Foreign Languages Teaching

This line of research proposed to contemplate aspects as: lexicography, from the point of view of language teaching; the production of monolingual, bilingual, bilingual used dictionaries; the contribution of corpora studies to the production of alternative dictionaries and to the description of translations; the practice of translation; the study of translation processes (cognitive and textual) concerning foreign language learning; technological resources and translation. Translation, under this perspective, can be investigated through new methodological paradigms, which allow the refinement of techniques for the quantitative and qualitative analysis of different corpora, the creation of new opportunities for more reliable objective research, considering its impact on interface translation and foreign language teaching.
