PUBLIC NOTICE NO. 04/PGET/2018

FOR SELECTION OF APPLICANTS TO MASTER’S AND DOCTORAL DEGREES OF THE POSTGRADUATE TRANSLATION STUDIES PROGRAM (PGET) ADMISSION 2ND SEMESTER 2018

 

  1. The PGET program makes it public that, from May 9, 2018 (12:00 p.m. – Brazilian time) to Jun 7, 2018 (23:59 p.m. – Brazilian time), the enrolment process covering the selection of applicants to fill 22 vacancies for master’s degree and 10 for doctoral degree is now opened.
  1. Applicants, who are holders of undergraduate degree certificate/diploma accredited by the Education Ministry or related authority in the applicant’s country of origin, may apply for the selecting process. The certificates/diploma should be accredited by the Collegiate of the PGET program, being it applicable exclusively to entering the program. Therefore, PGET’s accreditation does not hold any other validity in Brazil.
  1. Five (5) of the vacancies for master’s degree will be allocated to the Affirmative Action (AA) Policy of UFSC[1], for Brazilian applicants who are self-declared as Brazilian natives or Black or pardo (mixed-race people), who, according to the NORMATIVE RESOLUTION No. 52/CUn/2015, PUBLISHED IN JUNE, 16, 2015, belong to the Black racial ethnic group or belong to the indigenous peoples residing in the national territory and in cross-border regions or belong to Quilombola communities.
  1. Applicants, who live abroad or out of Florianópolis metropolitan area, will be allowed to carry out the stages of the selective process at a distance( as it was defined by the art. 5 of the complementary Law promulgated No. 495, published in January, 26, 2010). For this, applicants should follow the specific instructions laid down in this public notice.
  1. Right after sending the required documents, applicants will receive an automatic reply confirming the enrolment. There will be no other communication or confirmation from the PGET secretary, by any means, regarding the receipt of the documents required for the enrolment. Therefore, applicants have to wait for the publication of the homologation of the submission in the site of PGET program: http://ppget.posgrad.ufsc.br/. See the schedule of the Selection Process in item 12 of this public notice.
  1. It is applicants’ full responsibility ensuring that any e-mail, in which the required documents for the homologation of the enrolment are attached, will be received by the Secretary of the PGET in accordance to the schedule of the Selection Process and the conditions and specifications laid down in this public notice. Damaged files containing virus or having any other technical problem, which disables its electronic reading, will be automatically discarded without any warning.
  1. All information concerning the Selection Process is laid down in this public notice, thus is applicants’ full responsibility appropriately understanding it, and it is taken as a part of the selection process. In order to guarantee the Selection Process’ integrity, neither the Secretary of the PGET Program, nor its Coordination, nor the Commission of Selection will, by any means, supply applicants with extra information.
  1. The required documents for the homologation of enrolments are the following ones:

8.1. Proof of the enrolment, which should be electronically done in the PGET program website, http://capg.sistemas.ufsc.br/inscricao/. Right after finishing it, the applicant should print and save as PDF file the proof of enrolment that the system will generate;

8.2. Research Project, written in Portuguese, English or one of the languages indicated by supervisors in item 12 of this public notice. It should be a 10 to 12 pages length (without counting the references), typed in Times New Roman 12 and 1.5 line spacing. It should contain: title, introduction and argumentation – highlighting the relevance of the research subject – its objectives – including the definition and the clear delimitation of the study object – its theoretical basis, its methodology, the project schedule and its references. The research project can also be presented through a 15 to 20-minute video in LIBRAS – Brazilian Sign Language (BSL), provided that it contains the elements above listed.

8.3. Lattes Curriculum, accessible at lattes.cnpq.br Foreign applicants have to fill in the website’s forms with the relevant academic and professional information, especially those concerning the applicant’s intellectual written production carried out in the last four years (2017, 2016, 2015 and 2014). After filling in the forms, applicants should save it as a PDF file, so that it can be attached to the other required documents. In case of having already got Lattes curriculum, make sure the Lattes curriculum is updated until 2018, before attaching it to the other required documents.

8.4. Descriptive memorial, written in Portuguese, English or one of the languages indicated by supervisors in item 12 of this public notice. It should be a three to five pages length document (Times New Roman 12, line spacing 1.5.) that provides information regarding applicants’ personal and academic trajectories.

8.5 Undergraduate academic records or transcripts of completed programs;

8.6. Undergraduate diploma or certificate of completion of undergraduate degree or else a statement issued by an educational institution, accrediting that the applicant is enrolled in the last semester/year of the graduation course. In this case, selected applicants must deliver at least one of these documents to the PGET program in the date of enrolment.

8.7 Identity Document and Passport containing the applicant’s photograph and personal information.

8.8 Birth certificate and wedding certificate (90-day validity). In case of changing names after marriage, the certificate should contain update annotation.

8.9 Certificate of proficiency in a foreign language provided by an Educational Institution, as recommended by the Brazilian government agency, CAPES.  The PGET program will accept certificates of language proficiency as follows: in English, TOEFL, IELTS, Michigan and ELSA certificates; in French, DELF certificate; in Spanish, DELE (Spain), CELU (Argentine) and CELA (Mexico) certificates; in Italian CELI-CIC, CILS, IT-IT.IT and PLIDA certificates. Diplomas or certificates of completion of undergraduate degree in foreign languages and literatures will be also accepted.  Also, online language proficiency tests can be attended, according to the schedule laid down in item 15 of this public notice.

8.10. Only for Brazilian applicants who are self-declared as Brazilian natives or Black or pardo (mixed-race people): self-declaration informing the option for entering the PGET program via AA Policy of UFSC. (See the sample of self-declaration in Appendix I and II).  For applicants self-declared as Brazilian natives also a statement by

three recognized indigenous leaders and a statement by National Indian Foundation (Fundação Nacional do Índio – FUNAI) both accrediting that the applicant belong to an indigenous ethnicity.

 

  1. All foreign documents submitted to this selective process must be accredited by Brazilian consular authorities (Diplomatic Legalization), respecting the laws in force.
  1. All documents must be sent by Jun 7, 2018 (23:59 p.m. – Brazilian time), exclusively via email (selecaopget@gmail.com) in PDF format files as follows: a file containing all documents, a file containing the research project, a file containing the language proficiency certificate(s) and a file containing the applicant’s Lattes Curriculum. The body of the e-mail message of all applicants should contain the name of likely to be supervisor, and in the case of the applicants to the Selection Process for doctorate, all of them must inform, in the message body, the language or languages, whose applicants’ proficiency will be online evaluated.
  1. Having the registration deadline inspired, the Selection Commission, designated by the PGET program’ Coordination and approved by its full Collegiate, will check the documentation of all applicants, aiming at accepting or not the applications.

11.1 Only the applications sent within the enrolment period as it is laid down in this public notice, as well as those containing all the required documents, as laid down in item 8, will be homologated by the Selection Committee.

11.2 Those applicants, who have applied for AA policy of UFSC, must attend an interview with an examination board, designated and homologated by the Affirmative Action and Diversity Secretary (Secretaria de Ações Afirmativas e DiversidadesSAAD) of UFSC: day and time will be informed in the website of the PGET program. Applicants, whose self-declaration cannot be accredited by AA Policy Examination Board, will not be allowed to undergo the Selection Process. Applicants who provide the Examination board with misleading information, concerning the requirements laid down by Normative Resolution No. 52/CUn/2015, shall be subject to penalties for the crimes laid down in law.

  1. The selection process comprises:

13.1 English Language Proficiency test, to which all applicants for Masters are obliged to attend, excepting those who prove having the certificate in advance, as laid down in item 8.9. Master’s supervisors, who have been previously chosen by the applicants, may demand that, apart from English proficiency, their possible supervised students undergo a second foreign language proficiency test or undergo the Brazilian Sign Language -LIBRAS – proficiency test.

13.2 Proficiency test or proof of proficiency in a second foreign language for the applicants who applied for Doctorate. The second foreign language will be one of those indicated by the respective doctoral supervisor as shown in item 12. Doctoral Supervisors may require a third foreign language proficiency or the Brazilian Sign Language – LIBRAS – proficiency;

13.2.1. Foreign language proficiency tests or LIBRAS proficiency tests are eliminatory and must be attended by all applicants, excepting those who prove having the respective certificate in advance, as laid down in item 8.9. Applicants will be permitted to use dictionary along foreign language proficiency tests.

13.2.2. Language proficiency tests will be held at the Communication and Expression Centre (Centro de Comunicação e Expressâo – CCE) of UFSC, in a room to be informed on the website of the PGET program, www.pget.ufsc.br.

13.3 Interview with the Affirmative Action Policy examination board: day and time will be informed in the website of the PGET program.

13.3.1 The Affirmative Action Policy examination board will take as criteria the phenotype, in the case of self-declared Black or pardo (mixed-race people), and the statements laid down by item 8.10, in the case of self-declared Brazilian natives.

13.4. Analysis of applicant’s research project, which should match to the research line, to which it has been sent, as well as be adequate to the themes indicated by supervisors in item 12; Analysis of applicant’s descriptive memorial as laid down in item 8.4; Analysis of Lattes Curriculum, as laid down in item 8.3; oral argumentation, which can be carried out either virtually or in person in Portuguese, or LIBRAS, or even in another language requested by the supervisor.

  1. The final grade will be calculated as follows: 30% will be attributed to the research project; 30% to the descriptive memorial; 30% to the oral argumentation; 10% to Lattes Curriculum. The assessment and scoring criteria for the analysis of the research project are shown in Appendix III.

  1. The applicant will run for one of the vacancies that have been realised by likely to be supervisor who have been indicated at the time of the application.
  1. The final result will comprise the list of qualified applicants and their final grade, highlighting the ones who have been accepted to enter the PGET program.
  1. The applicants whose individual grades of the research project, the descriptive memorial, the oral argumentation and Lattes Curriculum are 7.0 (seven) or superior will be qualified. The applicants whose one of these grades is inferior to 7.0 (seven) will be disqualified. Those among the qualified applicants whose average final grades are the highest ones will be accepted to enter the PGET program according to the vacancies released by the likely to be supervisors, following a descending order of grades.
  1. In case two or more applicants to a single vacancy get the same average final grade, research project highest grade and applicants’ highest age are the tie-break criteria
  1. In case a vacancy is not filled, it will not necessarily be made available to any other applicant.
  1. Requests for appeal concerning the decisions of the Commission of Selection and its evaluations should be written and delivered in person to this commission, as laid down in item 15.
  1. The approved applicants should enrol in the Program within the time limit set by the Coordination of the Program. In case an approved applicant does not enrol in the Program, the Commission of Selection may call other qualified applicant, one whose research line is the same of that applicant.
  1. Cases not covered herein shall be resolved by the Commission of Selection.
